Accessing Scientific Data

Scope Note

Find information on and a list of NIH supported repositories for sharing and accessing scientific data.

The repositories on this page are currently being reviewed for potential updates to comply with Administrative directives and agency priorities.

Sharing data enables reuse, increases transparency, and facilitates reproducibility of research results. To bolster data sharing, NIH supports a number of data repositories.

In general, NIH does not endorse or require sharing or accessing data through any particular repository, although some initiatives and funding opportunities will have individual sharing requirements.

Tip

Overall, NIH encourages researchers to select the repository that is most appropriate for their data type and discipline when sharing data. See Selecting a Data Repository for more information.

NIH Controlled-Access Data Repositories

NIH is committed to ensuring that NIH controlled-access data are appropriately safeguarded. To achieve this, NIH has established detailed security and operational standards for NIH-supported Controlled-Access Data Repositories that control access to data through prospective review of data access requests, i.e., NIH Controlled-Access Data Repositories (NIH CADRs). These standards harmonize submission and access processes, standardize user terms of access, establish specific security requirements, ensure transparency, and align with national security directives. For a list of these repositories please see here.

Generalist Repositories

While NIH encourages the use of domain-specific repositories where possible, such repositories are not available for all datasets. When investigators cannot locate a repository for their discipline or the type of data they generate, a generalist repository can be a useful place to share data. Generalist repositories accept data regardless of data type, format, content, or disciplinary focus. NIH does not recommend a specific generalist repository and the list below, which is not exhaustive, is provided as a guide for locating generalist repositories.
