Submitting to PubMed Central

Scope Note

Learn how to Submit papers to PubMed Central (PMC) in accordance with the NIH Public Access Policy.

Complying With The 2024 Public Access Policy

Compliance with the Policy may be achieved through either:

  • Submission of the electronic version of the Author Accepted Manuscript to PubMed Central upon its acceptance for publication, for public availability without embargo upon the Official Date of Publication, or

  • Submission of the Final Published Article to PubMed Central from journals or publishers with formal agreements with NLM, upon the Official Date of Publication, for public availability without embargo.

Journals with an active agreement to deposit all articles can be found in the PMC Journal List, which is available from: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/journals/. As some journals included in the PMC Journal List may embargo public availability of articles, review the specific record associated with the journal of interest to confirm it has a Release Delay of 0 months (Immediate release) that meets Policy requirements and an Agreement Status of Active. Otherwise, you may need to make special arrangements with the journal to remove the embargo on a given article or submit the Accepted Author Manuscript to NIHMS.

A journal or publisher may also deposit select articles in PMC if open access arrangements are made. A list of publishers that provide this service is available from https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/about/selectivedeposit/.
