Assurance Review Process
The following resources are provided to assist Public Health Service (PHS) awardee institutions in obtaining an Animal Welfare Assurance (Assurance). It is the responsibility of National Science Foundation (NSF) or National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), not individual investigators, to establish and maintain an Assurance. Institutions should not submit any Assurance materials unless first contacted by OLAW.
Domestic Assurance
The Domestic Assurance is required for U.S. institutions that conduct live, vertebrate animal work onsite for PHS, NSF, or NASA-funded or supported animal activities.
Foreign Assurance
A Foreign Assurance is required for institutions outside the U.S. that conduct live, vertebrate animal work onsite for PHS, NSF, or NASA-funded or supported animal activities.
Interinstitutional Assurance
The Interinstitutional Assurance is required for institutions that do not have an approved Domestic or Foreign Assurance and are involved in PHS, NSF, or NASA-funded or supported animal activities that are conducted at another institution named as the performance site.
