NIH Institute, Center, and Office (ICO) Funding Considerations for Individual Fellowships

The information found in the Individual Fellowships overview applies across all NIH institutes, centers, and offices (ICOs). This page provides ICO-specific interest areas, due dates, and contacts related to individual fellowships.

National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH)
Interest Areas:
  • NCCIH participates in the NSRA Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships and the Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Transition Award. For NCCIH applications that include, but are not limited to the following are encouraged:
    • Individuals and clinician-scientists (e.g., physicians, complementary health practitioners, and other professionals) pursuing careers in complementary and integrative health research.
    • Training that strengthens rigor, reproducibility, and innovation in complementary and integrative health research.
    • Training in translational science, pragmatic clinical trials, and dissemination and implementation research to support the integration of complementary and integrative health approaches into health care and community settings.

National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Interest Areas:
  • The National Cancer Institute (NCI) supports fellowships in all areas of cancer research, including cancer prevention, control, behavioral sciences, population sciences, and translational research.
  • NCI supports funding for topics with a clear cancer focus in the research training plan.
Key Date Considerations:

F99/K00: K00 applications must be submitted directly to the assigned F99 Program Director six (6) months prior to the proposed activation date of the K00 award. This will also ensure the transition to the K00 postdoctoral phase takes place without interruption in funding. K00 applications may only be submitted by PIs with an F99 award.

Project Period Considerations:

F99/K00: K00 project period is three (3) years with the possibility to request adding a fourth year with strong justification for an additional year of training. These requests will be evaluated by program on a case-by-case basis.

Budget Considerations:

F99

  • Travel to mandatory NCI annual meeting during F99 (year 1) and following transition to K00 award (year 1): $1,500

K00

  • Salary: up to $80,000/year with budget justification. Salary support must be commensurate with the base salary that would have been paid by the institution with which the individual is affiliated with when the award is issued.
  • Research and career development: $30,000/year

NCI gives funding priority to applications that:

  • Indicate funds are available to support the candidate’s research training plan throughout the duration of the award.
  • The proposed scientific research question or approach is distinct from the mentor’s pending or active grants, and there is no substantial text duplication of the mentor’s specific aims.

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact NHGRI program staff prior to submitting an application.

Key Date Considerations:

Pre- to Postdoctoral Transition Fellowship (F99/K00)

  • NIH F99 recipients planning to transition to the K00 phase should contact their NIH Program Official as soon as postdoctoral plans develop, and no later than six months before the anticipated K00 start date. Recipients should discuss their transition timeline, eligibility, and required materials for activating the K00 phase.

Project Period Considerations:

Pre- to Postdoctoral Transition Fellowship (F99/K00)

  • F99 Predoctoral: Minimum of 1 year and up to 2 years
  • K00 Postdoctoral: Up to 3 years

Budget Considerations:

Pre- to Postdoctoral Transition Fellowship (F99/K00)

  • NHGRI will provide an additional $1,500 in each grant year for F99/K00 recipients to defray travel costs to attend the NHGRI Research Training and Career Development Annual Meeting.
  • For the K00 phase, NHGRI will contribute to the K00 salary in each grant year up to $80,000 and will provide up to $20,000 in each grant year towards Research and Development costs for the award recipient, which must be justified and consistent with the stage of development of the candidate and the proportion of time to be spent in research training and/or career development activities.
