Step-by-Step Guidance Available to Link Your ORCID iD to Your eRA Commons Profile

  • By NIH Staff, NIH

NIH requires all people listed as senior/key personnel on applications to obtain an Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier (ORCID iD) and link it to their eRA Commons Personal Profile. As we explain in these archived NIH Open Mike blogs from 2024 and 2019, this persistent identifier helps ensure accurate attribution of research outputs and supports integration across NIH systems to reduce administrative burden.

To assist applicants, NIH has a step-by-step guide available for linking an ORCID iD to an eRA Commons account. Note that:

  • An ORCID iD can be linked to only one eRA Commons account.
  • Contact the eRA Service Desk if you encounter an error when attempting to link your ORCID iD or need to remove an existing ORCID iD from a Commons profile.

Encouraging Use of the PHS Assignment Request Form in Applications

You have likely come across the Public Health Service (PHS) assignment request form when putting together your grant application. It’s optional, but we encourage applicants to fill it out. This form is available in nearly all competing NIH application form packages and allows you to provide specific application assignment and review information to referral and review staff.
