Tribal Health Research Office (THRO) Funding Policies and Considerations

Visit NIH Fiscal Policies for NIH-wide information on appropriations and other budgetary information (salary limits, stipends, tuition/fees) and Funding Decisions to learn about NIH's consistent and unified approach for making funding decisions. The THRO-specific information on this page builds on that general information.

Tip
Find additional grants and funding information (mission, interest areas, opportunities, and more) on the NIH Grants & Funding THRO Profile page.

Fiscal Year 2026

THRO does not have grant-making authority or administer grants. The office support grants deemed fundable after full review and initiation of a co-funding request by NIH ICO program staff or federal partners.

THRO works collaboratively with ICOs to identify funding opportunities that align with Tribal health priorities and THRO's mission. The office specifically supports grants and initiatives focusing on AI/AN people, health, research, research capacity, and research training.

THRO considers numerous factors in its co-funding decisions, including potential impact, relevance to the THRO mission, commitment of support by the requesting ICO, and the availability of funds.
