I Requested Data From an NIH-Funded Researcher, but They Won’t Share It. What Should I Do?

Researchers can notify NIH with concerns about a recipient’s compliance with the 2023 NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy at [email protected]. This may include concerns that a principal investigator is not maximizing the appropriate sharing of scientific data generated from NIH-funded or conducted research or otherwise required under the terms of the award. Providing relevant information about the award and the nature of the concern can help NIH determine the appropriate next steps.

Other general questions about the DMS Policy may also be sent to [email protected]. NIH staff will help address related questions on the DMS Policy and its implementation, including DMS Plans, allowable costs, and how the policy applies to NIH-supported research.

Before emailing, we encourage you to first contact your organization’s Office of Sponsored Programs and/or Authorized Organization Official.
