NIH Awards by Month

A new resource provides a clear view of NIH monthly funding trends across fiscal years. When combined with other information we make publicly available, these data help the research community and public better understand NIH investments in biomedical research, further supporting NIH’s commitment to transparency outlined in the NIH Gold Standard Science plan.

This resource:

  • Provides interactive charts showing the number and total funding of NIH extramural awards by month over recent fiscal years
  • Includes grants and other transactions, while excluding Research and Development contracts and intramural funding
  • Includes estimates for the current fiscal year, which are subject to change (see this NIH Extramural Nexus article)
  • Enables users to track funding patterns across fiscal years, including when awards are most frequently issued
  • Allows comparison between award counts and total funding

Users can access these charts through NIH RePORTER or the “Monthly NIH Awards Overview” in the NIH Data Book

Key features include:

  • Select one or more fiscal years to display
  • Hover over data points to view exact monthly values
  • Use the legend to show or hide specific years

View and export data in a table format for detailed analysis or the charts as images for presentations

Figure 1 shows the monthly number of NIH extramural awards across recent fiscal years, allowing users to compare seasonal patterns and year-to-year trends in award activity.

Multi-line chart displaying the number of NIH extramural awards by month (October through September) for multiple fiscal years, each represented by a distinct colored line. The x-axis shows months of the fiscal year, and the y-axis shows award counts. A legend identifies each line by fiscal year, including 2022 in darker Blue, 2023 in Red, 2024 in light Green, 2025 in Purple, and 2026 in light Blue. Data points can be hovered over in the interactive version to reveal exact values.

Figure 2 illustrates the total monthly funding associated with NIH extramural awards, highlighting funding levels and differences across fiscal years.

Multi-line chart showing total NIH extramural funding by month across several fiscal years, with each fiscal year represented by a different colored line. The x-axis lists months from October to September, and the y-axis represents total funding amounts in millions. A legend maps each color to a fiscal year, , including 2022 in darker Blue, 2023 in Red, 2024 in light Green, 2025 in Purple, and 2026 in light Blue. The interactive chart allows users to view precise monthly values.

Together, these figures show how the number of awards and total funding vary by month across fiscal years, enabling comparison of funding patterns over time. A notable dip in October–November 2025 is visible relative to prior years, reflecting delays in award issuance due to a lapse in appropriations, followed by a recovery in subsequent months.

Please check back monthly as the data are updated.
