ACTIONS FOR BUILDING CAPACITY (ABC) PROGRAM

A limited competition is announced by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) for 
the RFA "Actions for Building Capacity Program (ABC) in Support of the 
International Collaborations in Infectious Diseases Research (ICIDR)."  
The purpose of the ABC is to stimulate high quality training and to support 
current and future collaborative training-related research on infectious diseases 
that are predominantly endemic in or impact upon people living in tropical 
countries.  The intent of the ABC is to provide training opportunities for foreign 
investigators which will build research capacity and strengthen foreign and U.S. 
cooperation on tropical infectious diseases.

The NIAID-funded ICIDR (RFA AI-98-009) and companion ABC (RFA TW 98-004) 
were competed in FY 1999.  To receive an ABC, the PI had to have received an 
ICIDR award.  Of 15 ICIDR awardees, six qualified for ABCs.  Hence, in FY 2000 a 
new ABC limited competition is open to those nine ICIDR programs without an ABC.  
Letters will be sent to those qualified ICIDR awardees inviting them to apply for 
the new ABC award.
