Purpose

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) intends to promote the integration of environmental factors into studies of children’s health by publishing three distinct but integrated Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) that solicit applications in support of a Children’s Health Exposure Analysis Resource (CHEAR). CHEAR focuses specifically on providing access to infrastructure for comprehensive exposure analysis to existing epidemiological cohort studies involving research into children’s health.

Exposures measured by CHEAR will encompass the breadth of the exposome, the totality of biological, psycho-social, chemical and physical exposures through the use of both targeted and non-targeted methods of analysis. The program will also include the characterization of associated biological response indicators to provide additional information on exposures and their mechanistic effects. CHEAR will provide standardized analysis of samples and data as well as a data repository. This will enable an integration of exposure analysis across studies to integrate the combined contributions of multiple environmental factors as determinants of children’s health across a range of diseases and disorders.

The FOAs are intended for release in March 2015 with an expected application due date in late Spring 2015.

The FOA will utilize the U24 activity codes. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

The CHEAR Coordinating Center (U24) will serve as the administrative hub and external access point for CHEAR, managing the flow of materials, data, and analyses between CHEAR components and participating investigators. Applicants must have expertise in children's health research as well as in providing logistical infrastructure for coordinating interactions among Resource components and external investigators. In addition, experience in supporting administrative functions such as convening steering committee and CHEAR meetings, and organizing communication and outreach activities for the resource is expected.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
