Purpose

The NIDCD Mentored Clinical Scientist Development (K08) Award and Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development (K23) Award are intended to facilitate the research independence of clinically trained individuals at the junior faculty stage who seek to integrate both clinical practice and research trajectories in their careers. In general, the primary mentor of a K08 or K23 application directed to the NIDCD should be based at the applicant's home institution or at an institution within a reasonable distance (i.e., approximately 100 miles) of the applicant's institution to facilitate regular face-to-face contact in the mentoring relationship.  However, when the appropriate primary mentor is not within geographic proximity to the candidate, the NIDCD will consider longer-distance mentoring relationships, facilitated by electronic communication modalities, with appropriate justification.  In such cases, a secondary mentor at the home institution shall be named.
