Notice of Intent to Publish a Request for Applications for Alliance of Glycobiologists for Detection of Cancer: Tumor Glycomics Laboratories Research (U01)

Notice Number: NOT-CA-11-013

Key Dates

Release Date: June 7, 2011

Issued by

National Cancer Institute (NCI)

Purpose

The National Cancer Institute announces the intent to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for research projects that elucidate how changes in carbohydrates promote cancer progression and use this information to identify glycan-based abnormalities with the potential to serve as biomarkers for early cancer detection or risk assessment. The proposed projects are also expected to determine the ability (in terms of sensitivity and specificity) of these biomarkers to distinguish cancer from control using clinical specimens. Ultimately, the most promising biomarker candidates are expected to be tested in clinical validation studies. In summary, the results of the research supported by this FOA are to provide insight into the roles of glycoproteins, glycolipids, glycosaminoglycans, and/or their binding proteins in cancer development and progression and to identify potential targets for cancer prevention. In addition to individual research projects, the awardees will also be expected to engage in trans-network activities, including joint pilot projects with other awardees.

This planned Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), which will use the cooperative agreement funding instrument, is expected to be published in Summer 2011 with an application due date in the Fall of 2011.

The planned FOA is a continuation of the initiative referred to as the Alliance of Glycobiologists for Detection of Cancer (http://glycomics.cancer.gov). However, this FOA is designed to solicit not only renewal applications but also new applications for relevant research projects. Therefore, all investigators with appropriate expertise and capabilities, irrespective of any prior association with the Alliance, are encouraged to consider this opportunity.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
