The nomination period is now open until January 31st, 2012 for Small Business Administration’s Tibbetts Awards and SBIR Hall of Fame. The Tibbetts Awards are presented to those small businesses and individuals judged to exemplify the best in the SBIR and the STTR programs. The SBIR Hall of Fame awards will be made to firms with a long period of extraordinary success of research, innovation, and commercialization within the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. The 14th Annual NIH SBIR/STTR Conference will be held in Louisville, Kentucky from May 30 to June 1, 2012. We are pleased to work with our local host, the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation to plan an exciting conference for you. The conference will be held on May 30-31 and an optional workshop (to be determined) will be held on June 1. Please block this date off on your calendars and stay tuned for more details as the logistics and agenda are developed.

NIH Office of Technology Transfer offers new exclusive license agreements for start-up companies

The NIH Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) has developed new agreements for start-up companies obtain licenses for early-stage biomedical inventions developed by intramural researchers at NIH or FDA. Companies that are less than 5 years old and have fewer than 50 employees will be eligible to use the new, short-term exclusive Start-Up Evaluation License Agreement and the new Start-Up Commercial License Agreement. These agreements allow a start-up company to take ideas sitting on the shelf, and attract additional investments to develop these NIH and FDA inventions into life-saving products. NIH announces the availability of a Commercialization Assistance Program (CAP) for its SBIR Phase II awardees from the past five years. This program is aimed at assisting participants evaluate their commercialization options based on their specific SBIR-supported technologies and to develop a solid market-entry strategic plan. NIH Offers SBIR Niche Assessment Program for Phase I SBIR Awardees July 15, 2011 NIH has contracted with Foresight Science and Technology to perform Technology Niche Analyses (TNA™) for 100 NIH SBIR Phase I awardees funded in fiscal years 2011 and 2012. (NOTE: This program is not available to STTR awardees.) For each eligible SBIR Phase I project, the TNA™ will assess potential uses of the technology and then provide a report that addresses the end-user needs, current and emerging competing technologies, the market dynamics, and the technology's competitive advantage. The PHS 2011-2 Omnibus Solicitation of the NIH, CDC, FDA, and ACF for SBIR/STTR Grant Applications and SF 424 (R&R) Application Guide for SBIR/STTR Grant Applications are now available. The solicitation consists of: (1) parent funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for SBIR, (2) a parent FOA for STTR, and (3) narrative descriptions of the programs and research topics (in PDF - 1.60 MB and MS Word - 1.4 MB formats). The due dates for CY 2011 are April 5, August 5, and December 5. AIDS and AIDS-related applications are due May 7, September 7, 2011, and January 7, 2012.
